How liquids assist in quicker deterioration of stones ?
Water or any other liquids are readily absorbed by the stones. Higher the porosity value of the stone, the more water it absorbs. This impregnated water then dissolves binders such as calcite weakening the structure of the stone.

Apart from that they react with the minerals and impurities of the stone creating other adverse effects. For example, impurities such as iron can react with water forming rust within the stone. The iron content in stone can also oxidise and make rusted spots and areas of the stone weak and crumbly.

( Rusting or oxidation gives the stone a reddish-brown discolouration )
