How salt creates irreparable damage to stones ?
Salt can either occur naturally within stones or can be introduced through moisture, rain water etc. It is causes efflorescence (white spots) which leads to formation of surface or structural salt crystals.

Surface crystals are formed when soluble salts move to the surface and bloom. They do not harm the structure generally and can be cleaned. The structural crystals on the other hand form within the pores of the stone and bloom within the structure rupturing the weaker spots of the stone and deteriorating the stone inside out which cannot be restored.
